As a practice dhk strives for design excellence and commits itself to contextual and systematically integrated solutions. Similarly dhk believes in the sustainability of solutions and recognises the opportunity to make a substantial difference with the broad range and scale of projects we are involved with. Our natural environment is inseparable from ourselves and we at dhk believe that this resource must be considered and conserved. dhk is currently involved in a number of potential Green Star rated buildings, together with some of the world’s most experienced and respected consultants. A strong, interdisciplinary team-based, relationship with these consultants is upheld to ensure projects are tackled holistically and to ensure a beneficial solution to client and environment.
Apart from project implementation, dhk promotes internal awareness with a substantial Green Data Base and an in-house Green Lecture Series. The Green Data Base is updated daily with local “green” products, building precedents, newsletter / blog updates from all over the world, “responsible living” media, design guidelines and educational material. It also contains the Green Star SA rating tool. The Green Lecture Series is a weekly series of talks held at the dhk’s Cape Town offices to present sustainable technologies, products, consultants and educational material.
Our office also further promotes sustainable lifestyles and work ethics by providing the following in-house facilities:
- A shower for people cycling to work
- White paper, glass, aluminium and plastic recycling
- Increasing awareness of measures to save paper and electricity
- Weekly Green Data Base updates in the form of a newsletter
- Knowledge and information is openly shared among our locally and internationally experienced staff in the office
- Promotion and regular attendance of related seminars and talks in and around Cape Town
